Mucho Gusto, Sir Winston, Tacitus Among Dubai World Cup Contenders; 20 U.S.-Based Horses Signed Up For March 28th Card

A group five U.S.-based runners appear poised to compete in the $12 million Dubai World Cup on March 28 at and another 15 American horses are lining up to run in other races on that day at Meydan Racecourse, according to a release Wednesday from the Dubai Racing Club.

Included in the lineup for the World Cup are Pegasus World Cup winner Mucho Gusto, Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston, Pennsylvania Derby winner Math Wizard, Wood Memorial winner Tacitus, and War Story, most recently third in the Pegasus.

Imperial Hint, third in last year’s Dubai Golden Shaheen, will make another bid in that race this year, along with Captain Scotty, Killybegs Captain, and Truck Salesman, one of five horses sent to Dubai to compete on Dubai World Cup day for trainer Doug O’Neill.

United, second at 51-1 to Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf, is listed as a contender in the 1 1/2-mile Dubai Sheema Classic on the turf for trainer Richard Mandella.

Mandella also trains one of five Kentucky Derby hopefuls from the U.S. who will battle for qualifying points in the UAE Derby. They are Mandella’s Tizmagician, Jerry O’Dwyer-trained Shotski, O’Neill-trained Fore Left, Steve Asmussen-trained Rowdy Yates, and Wrecking Crew from the stable of Peter Miller, who also has five contenders for the World Cup card.
