Horses galloping at Kirkwood Stables

Why Choose Kirkwood?

Experience. Location. Facilities.

Why choose Kirkwood Stables over other training facilities? Not only does Kip Elser create customized and proven training programs based on his 30+ years’ experience in the industry, the location provides the ideal climate and unique facilities to better train young and older horses.

Springdale RacecourseThe Kirkwood Stables training grounds are located within Springdale Race Course, home to two of the most important steeplechases on the yearly calendar – the Carolina Cup in the spring and the prestigious Colonial Cup in the fall. The spacious, well maintained grounds are laid out in the European training style providing a variety of places in which to train and exercise both the young and older horses. The extensive trail system through the woods with both grass and dirt surfaces and different distance tracks offer diversity and challenges for our yearlings, 2-year-olds and older horses. Our tracks include 3 turf courses and 3 dirt tracks, which range from 5/8 of a mile to 2 miles in distance. Find out more about our horse training facilities.

Kirkwood Stables prepares horses for European racing. Our quarantine facility can keep horses in training before heading to Europe and we have the option of galloping in either direction on both turf and dirt.

Camden itself is a small town with a rich horseracing history. The environment is laidback and peaceful creating a tranquil setting for both young and older horses. Camden is easily accessible with its own private airport and international airports close by in Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC. Interstates I-20, I-77 and I-95 are all located within 30 miles of Camden.
